What is an Anchor Rode?

← All Topics

The anchor rode is an easily overlooked yet important component in your boat’s anchoring system. The boat anchor is designed to fix the position of your boat in the water when it is not tied to a pier. However, the quality of your anchor rode determines how well your boat is cushioned from the shocks associated with being pitched and pulled in various directions while planted in bed of the body of water in which your boat is operating.

While anchor rodes for larger vessels are often made of chain, most small and medium size boats require a quality anchor rode that is both strong and flexible, and Nylon is the preferred material for achieving both. The flexibility/elasticity of the rode determines how much tension can be absorbed, while tensile strength determines how much direct stress your rode can carry. Nylon balances both needs well.
